Sure you can get Z-fighting or weird shadow artifacts, but the people who write the big name renderers aren't idiots. If you've seen Elysium, the big ring world shots, a gigantic scene, even there it works well. You won't care if it can accurately represent things at a Planck distance, or even a nanometer as long as it looks good. If you have 32 GB of geometry data, you would be well miffed if half of that was just wasted space.īut of course you can mix, like do the intersection tests in double where precision is the most important.Įven in VFX simulation there is single precision stuff (in Houdini it is selectable for several types of simulations), because even with a small farm you can have a hundred Xeon cores churning a day to produce a couple of seconds of a smoke simulation. It is also an issue of memory, with gigantic memory sets the actual datatype matters. Is there anything out there that I can upgrade to? I looked at the "Mojave list" and I think that there must be some others that would work. Most raytracers uses a lot of floats because single precision floats tends to be faster. The card in my computer is presently an ATI Radeon HD 5870. I know that a regular TV will do me nothing. It needs to be quiet as the Mac Pro Is situated in a recording studio - the computer is in the room. The display needs a have a fast refresh rate as well as being sharp and clear - and sizable. everything that one of my professional DAWs - Avid's Pro Tools, Apple's Logic Pro, and MOTU's Digital Performer - run. This new monitor needs to be able to display all the same graphics, mixing board, editing window, transport window, playback controls. Right now I am running an Apple Cinema HD Display (2560 x 1600) and an HP ZR30w (2560 x 1600). I am trying to have the same visual real estate that I have now spread across two 30" displays on one larger display and at the same size and clarity. I need a new graphics card, one that will run at least 4K on my older mid 2012 Mac Pro. I asked this question in another post: but I was unclear in defining what I truly needed.
